The Garden: Week 4

Saturday, July 21, 2012

I had to skip a couple weeks of updating you on our garden because of the wedding and honeymoon, obviously. :) So here are pictures from this week.

The Garden
Tomatoes
Spinach
Romaine and Oregano
Rosemary
Kale and Romaine
Carrots and Onions
Herbs
Mallard Fillmore

Everything is growing so well! Even our tomato plants, which I had completely given up on, are making a great comeback. Our early girl tomato plant even has two little red tomatoes that appeared while we were on our honeymoon. Oh, and all that romaine, kale, and spinach? Looks like we'll be eating salads and using my juicer on a regular basis for the rest of the summer.

In case you were wondering, Mallard Fillmore is a little fellow that we found in our shed after we bought the house. Naturally, I had to continue the presidential name theme or Theodore Roosevelt would have been very displeased.

A few questions for those of you who are knowledgable about gardening:
1. How do I stop my cilantro from growing like crazy and get it to actually produce big, usable leaves instead?
2. Is my spinach plant supposed to look like that on the top? Or should I start trimming it or something?

Overall, I'm thrilled with how my little garden is growing! For my very first garden, I'm just relieved that anything sprouted at all, much less this much of it. The only losses so far are 3 out of 4 cucumber plants. The 4th one is barely holding one, so I guess we'll see if it's still around next week. :)

  1. The spinach plant has "bolted" aka gone to seed. You can still eat it but it wont be as delicious. I am no expert gardener, but that same thing happened to mine. I have no idea about the cilantro, and look forward top hearing the answer myself! ;-)

    1. I use my juicer all the time! Carrot/apple juices are my favorite, but I drink a lot of green juices too.

  9. Hi Michelle,
I just discovered your blog via pinterest recently. You seem sweet and fun and I too love MT!
Anyway, your spinach has bolted/gone to seed, which they tend to do on the long, hot summer days. Spinach does best in the spring and fall. Still edible, but probably a little bitter.
Cilantro grows the best big leaves if you continually "mow" it. As in, cut it with scissors a couple inches above the soil. Then it will continue to grow nice usable leaves. Otherwise, it too will bolt/go to seed. Which then produces coriander, which can also be useful in the kitchen. Cilantro= leaves, Coriander=seeds.
    Hope that helps. Happy gardening!

  10. Well I know nothing about gardening, but that looks like a very nice little garden you've got going on there! I keep meaning to figure out how to make an herb garden to use in cooking. I'm so lazy though! Lol.
