This Friday is my birthday! Jordan has to work almost the entire weekend, so I'm going home to spend time with my friends and family. My little brother will even be in town.
My friend, Meg, and I have been talking for quite a while about getting tattoos. So we finally decided that this is the weekend we should do it. I'm keeping mine a secret until I actually get it done, just in case I change my mind. :) You can tell that I'm drawn to delicate tattoos though.
But I've been thinking a lot about tattoo placement lately. I'm pretty set on the side of the ribcage location for now. It's somewhere that I can still see it easily, unlike on the shoulders or back of the neck, which I think are so pretty. However, it's discrete enough that it would never affect job opportunities or anything like that.
Do any of you have tattoos? If so, where are they located? And tell me what kind of pain to expect! :)

I have 4...I had them all done before the age of 18 and regret them all. I can't wait to find the time to have something put over them!!! I have one on my ankle, two on my hips, and one on my lower back. Make sure you put A LOT of thought into it!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI have one on my shoulder blade.I knew from the time I was 13 that I wanted it and, at 18, I went and got it done. It's been 12 years and I still love it.
ReplyDeletePain...meh. It's more of an annoying type of ouch than a scream-and-cry kind.
I have one and the pain wasn't bad. It feels just like Kristina above described. Placement is very important, and thinking about what you want because it will be there forever, but also making sure you have an excellent tattoo artist as well. Ask to see their work so you can see if you like their style. I got mine 4 years ago and still love it, it has a lot of personal meaning to me. Every time I look at it, I am reminded of its meaning and it makes me smile.
ReplyDeleteI have one on my hip; I got it when I was 21 about 4 years ago. I had thought a lot about it and still love it. The other commenters have described the pain pretty appropriately...it's really more just annoying and you'll want it to be over with, but you should be alright, especially if you're getting something relatively small. :) good luck!
ReplyDeleteI have 5 total (as of now). one below my inner left ankle, (my newest) an anchor on my outside left wrist, lower back, top on right foot, and my favorite on the inside of my upper left arm. the pain is different in every single place of your body. rib-cages generally hurt THE WORST. my only advice is to think about what you want for at least 6 months to a year...to make sure you are completely set on having it on your body for the rest of your life :)
ReplyDeletepicking an excellent artist is almost just as important as the tattoo itself. and be prepared for the pain...if you can, try and watch the artist as they do it...I found that if I watch the needle, it's less painful because you aren't wondering when it's going to actually hit your skin. the pain is annoying and pretty dreadful, but you'll get through it. PAIN IS ONLY TEMPORARY.
have a blast Michelle!!
I have one on my right foot that says, "Always." Yes, it is from Harry Potter, and yes, I put a lot of thought into it and don't regret it a single bit. As a future teacher, I have to be careful about the shoes I wear, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. I am in the process of planning another one, and it will probably go on my ribcage.
ReplyDeleteThis may sound weird, but I know other people that have said it as well. The pain is an addicting kind of pain. Yes, it hurts, but it's nowhere near as bad as anybody made it out to be beforehand and if I'm honest, I really enjoyed the experience and kind of can't wait to go through it again :)
I have a few and I hear ya about delicate tattoos - I have one on the outside of my foot, both sides of my ribs and the top of my shoulder. If you're looking for something feminine and soft, ask your artist to use gray ink instead of black.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see!!
Exciting! I have a small star on the inside of my wrist - I love it! It is easy enough to cover, but obvious enough that I can enjoy it. It actually didn't hurt much while it was doing it, but it did hurt a lot more afterwards! The closest thing I can relate it to is a bee sting. Good Luck, can't wait to see!
ReplyDeleteI have eight. Places I don't recommend? Your ribs. Hurts like a beyotch.
ReplyDeleteI don't have any but I've been thinking about it a lot lately. Right now I'm thinking rib cage (except for the pain...) and the inside of my foot.
ReplyDeleteMy best description of the pain is a vibrating bee sting. It's tolerable though. I have three very small tattoos: hip, wrist and foot. I'm thinking of adding to what's on my wrist. Good luck!
ReplyDeletePeony
I don't have one but I am interested in getting one (or some). I always get stuck on the location too. It sucks that jobs right now are largely controlled by the older generation who, for some reason, think tatoos equal degenerate trouble-makers.
ReplyDeletei have a tattoo on my ankle that i LOVE. initially, it hurt like crazy, but the pain subsided as she retraced. i only felt it more when she'd start filling in a new area closer to my calf or foot :) pain is different for everyone so you may or may not have the same experience
ReplyDeletehappy early birthday! i hope you have an awesome tattooing experience and a wonderful birthday weekend :)
I'd get mine on the side rib too!
